Archivausstellung & Edition 2025: »How can we connect?«

In einer Zeit, in der Grenzen – sowohl physische als auch mentale – zunehmend in Frage gestellt werden, untersucht das Projekt »What the Flag?!« dieses Jahr die Frage, wie Kunst die Verbindung zwischen Menschen, Institutionen und Regionen fördern kann. »What the Flag?!« wurde 2016 vom Netzwerk Very Contemporary ins Leben gerufen. Dazu werden jedes Jahr Künstler:innen eingeladen, eine neue, individuelle Fahne zu gestalten und auf die Reise durchs Grenzgebiet zu schicken.

Die diesjährige Ausgabe hat ihre Premiere am Internationalen Museumstag (18.05.2025) im Kunsthaus NRW. Ausgangspunkt für die Edition 2025 war die Frage: Wie können wir uns verbinden? Bis 1. Juni sind die neuen Flaggen im Salon des Kunsthauses zu sehen, danach reisen sie durch die Euregio Maas-Rhein zu den Institutionen des Netzwerks Very Contemporary.

Parallel zur neuen Edition 2025 zeigt das Kunsthaus NRW im historischen Kreuzgang im Klostergarten 14 Flaggen früherer Ausgaben aus dem »What the Flag?!«-Archiv. Die Präsentation zeigt die Stärke und Vielfalt des Projekts: Seit 2016 entstand eine reiche Sammlung von Flaggen, von bekannten und aufstrebenden, lokalen und internationalen Künstler:innen. Die Auswahl aus der Collection wurde von Marcel Schumacher, Elke Kania und »WtF?!«-Initiator Wouter Huis getroffen.

»What the Flag?!« at Kunsthaus NRW – a double feature

The project »What the Flag?!« was started in 2016 by the network Very Contemporary and has since gathered a rich collection of flags by a wide range of artists. To highlight this ongoing initiative, Kunsthaus NRW is showcasing 14 flags selected from earlier editions of »What the Flag?!« as a guest appearance. The selection was made by Kunsthaus NRW director Marcel Schumacher, Kunsthaus NRW curator Elke Kania, and »WtF?!« Initiator Wouter Huis. Alongside the current edition 2025, from 18 May to 1 June, the flags are on view in the historic cloister of the Kunsthaus NRW, creating a vibrant dialogue between past contributions and this year’s theme: »How can we connect?«.

2025 – »What the Flag?! – How can we connect?«
In times when borders —both physical and mental—are increasingly questioned, this project investigates how art can foster a connection between individuals, institutions, and regions. The 2025 edition launches on International Museum Day 18 May at Kunsthaus NRW and will be shown in the Kunsthaus’ Salon until 1 June 2025. From 2 June, the newly created flags will travel across the Meuse-Rhine Euregio, hosted by the participating institutions of the Very Contemporary network.
